Police Has Made Many Mistakes

The Special Task Force DIG, Waruna Jayasundara, who participated in an interview with journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama, admitted that the police had made several mistakes in the investigation of Club Wasantha.

He said that the crime scene should have been protected better to preserve evidence and it was wrong for a police DIG to ask a suspect to make a confession to the media. Waruna Jayasundara mentioned that Rotumba Amila, a suspect in the Club Wasantha case, had been arrested for another killing where an estate superintendent had been gunned down.

Waruna Jayasundara also noted that there are 18 suspected criminals in the UAE who are on the Interpol red list and they are to be extradited. He said that there is a need to make representations to the French Embassy in Sri Lanka if they have granted asylum to a person such as Kanjipani Imran.

He pointed out that there have been about 200 killings within the last few months by organized criminal gangs. The STF officer, who spoke in a composed but tough tone, said that he would never give in to political or administrative pressure from the top. He just said, “We are different.”
