Deshanbandu verdict on 24th

The Country will know if the current Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon will still be in his position in a few days time .
To be exact the date is July 24th -Next Wednesday.

The hearing continued until 8:50pm on Tuesday and the aring was lengthy .

The Supreme three-judge-bench comprised Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena listened to nine Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police.

Nine petitioners claim that Deshabandu Tennakoon who has been convicted for violations of fundamental rights is not suitable to hold the post of Inspector General of Police

However, IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and the Attorney General argue that Deshabandu Tennakoon has been suitably appointed to the post.

The hearing into these petitions continued for several days as there were hair splitting arguments from both sides.

The Supreme three-judge-bench comprised Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena.

Geoffrey Alagaratnam PC, Upul Jayasuriya PC, Shamil Perera PC, Saliya Pieris PC, Viran Corea PC, Senior Counsel Suren Fernando and Thishya Weragoda appeared for the petitioners.

Romesh de Silva PC appeared for IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, while Senior Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle appeared for the Attorney General.

The Supreme Court held that four police officers, including Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon have violated the fundamental rights of petitioner W. Ranjith Sumangala by his illegal arrest, detention and subjection to torture at the Mirihana Police Station, which was under the supervision of Deshabandu Tennakoon in 2011.
