Wimal Weerawansa was not in court as usual. His security officer produced a medical report stating that Weerawansa was suffering from gastritis and had been advised by doctors to take complete rest. The report indicated that he had not left his house for the past four days.
Judge Nawaratna Marasinghe examined the medical certificate and discovered it was issued at a maternity home, “Kethumathi,” in Panadura.
Judge Marasinghe was visibly annoyed because this case, filed in 2017, involved serious charges, and Weerawansa had missed several court dates citing medical reasons. Deputy Solicitor General Ayesha Marasinghe presented a list of dates on which Weerawansa had been absent from court, citing medical reasons. The dates included October 2, 2019, February 16, 2021, September 13, 2023, October 27, 2023, December 12, 2023, and March 1, 2024.
Judge Marasinghe ordered Dr. Rohan Liyanarachchi, who issued the medical certificate, to appear in court with all medical records, including treatment details and timings. Wimal Weerawansa is facing charges of acquiring assets worth LKR 75 million, for which he has not been able to explain the source of income.
