In a strange turnaround of events a party secretary and others have been arrested while trying to take a bribe from their own presidential candidate.
Several officials including the secretary of the Eksath Lanka Podujana Pakshaya have now been arrested while soliciting a bribe of Rs. 30 million from Presidential candidate former PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake, who is no stranger to controversy.
They have been arrested by the officials of the Bribery Commission in Borella while solicitiong the bribe to offer nomination to Ratnayake from the party. The complaint has been made by a civil actist who regularly shows up at protest.
Chairman of the Citizen’s Movement Against Fraud, Corruption, and Waste Kamantha Thushara has made the complaint. Now Janka Rathnayaka and the party Secretary and other officials are behind bars.
Ratnayake was the former Chairman of the PUCSL and refused to vacate his seat despite requests by the new Government led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Thereafter, a motion was passed in parliament in May this year, to oust Ratnayake from his seat Janaka Ratnayake was accused by his personal assistant Gayathri Bimba Illanperuma for publication of obscene material, sexual exploitation and harassment.
She said that she had a longstanding intimate relationship with Ratnayake and he threatened to release all intimate videos of the duo to third parties.
Bimba had to flee the country and take refuge in Singapore following threats by Janaka Ratnayake about releasing intimate videos taken by him. However Janka Rathnayaka who was strong supporter of Gothabaya Rajapaksha now is getting ready to rule the country.
